MATH

These 6-week courses offer students a skill-building program of practice and learning in preparation for a successful year of math. Weekly homework assignments will be given to assure the best results.
* MATH WORKSHOPS (Grades 1-5) - Students finally learn their Times Tables, master the four basic operations (+, - x, /), work on decimals, fractions, & use hands-on manipulatives: Tangrams, Pattern & Attribute Blocks, Math Tiles, Geo Boards, etc. Each student gets his/her own folder, workbook, pencils, and a set of manipulatives to take home and practice with.

* PRE-ALGEBRA (Grades 6 & Up) - This workshop is a confidence-builder as well as a great skill-builder for students intending to take Pre-Algebra or an accelerated math course. To reinforce all the necessary skills needed to have a successful year in math, we will cover:
· Order of Operations · Fractions, Decimals & Percents
· Word Problems: distance, interest, work, discount, time, etc.

* ALGEBRA I (Grades 7 & Up) – Sharpen your math skills by reinforcing knowledge of algebraic operations as we explore:
· Integers (natural, whole, rational, irrational and real)
· Fractions, Decimals & Percents · Simple algebraic equations.

* ALGEBRA II (Grades 9 & UP) – An introduction to advanced Algebra: algebraic factoring, graphing, logarithms, imaginary numbers, and simple trigonometric functions.

* GEOMETRY (Grades 8 & Up) - The course will focus on:
· Points, lines, planes & angles · Elementary Proofs: Theorems
· Word Problems involving: Area, Perimeter & Circumference
of quadrilaterals, polygons, triangles, trapezoids, circles, etc.

STUDY SKILLS

* STUDY SKILLS (Middle School & High School) - Good study skills are crucial to academic success and enable students to excel now and in the future! This is a very popular class that improves organizational, note taking, time management & test-taking skills. Students learn the most effective way to pay attention, take and organize lecture notes, and prepare for objective and essay examinations. Students will gain valuable skills that will enable them to study, manage time, and organize more effectively, thereby achieving better grades in school!

READING & COMPREHENSION

* READING READINESS & ENRICHMENT (Grades 1 - 3) These workshops are for new or beginning readers who need to work on their basic reading skills. Emphasis is placed on decoding knowledge through ‘phonics’ as well as ‘whole word’ instruction. Fun reading activities make these classes a must!

* READING COMPREHENSION (Grades 3 & Up) - Are you not understanding or not remembering what you are reading? When it is time to retell the story or answer questions, are you “at a loss for words?” Master the art of comprehension through guided reading, dictation and oral re-reading. Students will also read books of their choice as they reinforce their knowledge of vocabulary and discover the intrinsic value of literacy and a lifetime of positive reading experiences!

SPELLING & GRAMMAR

* SPELLING & GRAMMAR ENRICHMENT (Gr. 1 & Up) These workshops are set in a fun, non-intimidating atmosphere allowing students to learn basic spelling and grammar rules while getting personal help they need to become better spellers!

WRITING

* CREATIVE WRITING (Grades 4 & Up) – Finally, learn how to WRITE: · Essays · Journals · Short Stories, and more! Students will receive immediate feedback on their work and get as much personal attention as possible as they are being guided through their daily writing assignments. Most of all, students will learn to have fun writing creatively!

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign languages include: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Hebrew, Latin, Russian & Japanese
· Beginning – Learn a foreign language the fun and easy way! Explore: alphabet, pronunciation, simple sentences, directions and more in a non-stressful learning environment. An excellent introduction for those students who will be taking a regular or an accelerated first year of a foreign language in school!
· Intermediate – The focus is on comprehension & improving the student's ability to respond to dialogue. Students are given plenty of practice with conjugating of verbs, past & future tenses, as well as pronunciation, grammar & new vocabulary.
· Advanced – This class is taught in the foreign language to promote fluency in oral conversation as well as grammar with a thorough review of the Advanced Placement (AP) Exam.

This class will help you understand the science of living organisms.

Do you want to learn how to TYPE this summer? Are you tired of asking people to type for you or even paying for papers you should be able to do yourself quite easily? In this workshop you will develop fundamental typing and word-processing skills! You will also become familiar with appropriate spacing, centering, margins, business letters, reports and more. With outside practice you can expect to reach a speed of approximately 30 words per minute or more!

ART & MUSIC

* ART I (Ages 6-8) – Don't let a modern day Picasso or Rembrandt go undiscovered in your child! In this fun, hands-on workshop, students analyze and interpret derivations of shapes, symbols and colors found in contemporary art and design using paint, paper, clay, crayons and objects taken from nature. Learn a step-by-step approach to drawing and painting & experiment with technique, placement, perspective and composition. Create well-balanced, colorful works of art to take home and enjoy!
T12 6 Tuesdays 1pm – 3pm Ages 6-8
* ART II (Ages 9-11) – In this class, emphasis is placed on color, line, composition, design, and rhythm as they relate to the natural world with particular focus on contemporary associations found in architecture, advertising and design. Historical and cultural aspects of art from: Native America, Asia, and Africa will be studied. Through a series of guided exercises, students will learn elements of good design including line, shape, texture and value. Using the dry media tools such as pencils, crayons, pastels, felt or brush pens, students develop the skills necessary to create drawings they’ll be proud of.
T13 6 Tuesdays 3pm – 5pm Ages 9-11
* INTRODUCTION TO PIANO OR GUITAR (All Ages) - Sign up for private music lessons, given in your home, for the price of group lessons! Two 45-minute lessons each week are packed with fun, learning strategies to help you explore piano or guitar and discover musical and rhythmic notation, finger coordination, and development of music listening and playing skills. A real bargain for the highest quality in music instruction!

TEST PREPARATION

* TEST TAKING (Grades 3 – 5) - Do you want to become a whiz at taking tests like the CTBS, ERB’s, Stanford 9, and the SAT’s? Learn the concepts covered on many elementary and middle school standardized exams. Review math, grammar and reading comprehension skills as you learn the tricks, and master the techniques for eliminating, guessing, and for scoring your best! There will be plenty of timed practice with actual tests.
T4 6 Tuesdays 5pm – 7pm Grades 3 – 5
* ISEE (2 Levels) & HSPT PREPARATION (Grades 5-9) - Most top private schools require these entrance tests in their application process for admission. Our courses cover vocabulary, reading comprehension, and mathematics. Emphasis is also placed on becoming "test smart" by learning various test-taking strategies and shortcut techniques. Also, organizing and writing the essay will be thoroughly examined.

(11 years & UP) Like students with talents in athletics or the arts, students with academic talent deserve opportunities to develop their skills to the highest possible level. This program identifies, nurtures, and develops academic talent among highly-able youngsters.
F7 6 Fridays 1pm – 3pm Johns Hopkins Univ. Exam
* PSAT, SAT I & SAT II SEMINARS (12 years & UP) - Improve your chances of getting into the college of your choice with higher PSAT, SAT-I & SAT II scores. Learn strategies for problem solving, time management and logical reasoning. Learn shortcuts and tricks for verbal and math problem solving in standardized testing as you review skills in English and Math. A diagnostic exam will be given to determine strengths and weaknesses. This course will help to develop a personal study strategy to improve both weak and strong areas. Lots of practice with timed samples will add points to your scores.

Testing is provided using a battery of tests that are utilized as diagnostic tools to determine trouble spots needing remediation or gifted tendencies needing acceleration. Evaluation is done in a pleasant, non-competitive setting & results are confidential.
